World Cancer Day

Smartfish runs a clinical trial in Sweden, Italy and Slovakia

This years theme is ”We can. I can.”, and focuses on what we all can contribute with in fighting cancer. Smartfish’s goal is to treat cancer patients during chemo- or radiotherapy and also after completed anti-cancer treatment for the patient to regain strength and vitality.

Many patients suffering from cancer are malnourished, either due to the disease, due to the medication or a combination of both. Unwanted weight loss for patients with cancer is often associated with loss of muscle mass, reduced fat depots, osteoporosis and reduced muscle strength. Malnutrition (cachexia) along with cancer is also linked to systemic inflammation and increased risk of infection due to the weakened immune system.

High quality nutritional supplements and physical training are important elements in the treatment of cancer patients with unwanted weight loss.

Smartfish Nutrifriend nutrition drinks are developed for patients with disease related malnutrition, for example patients with cancer. The drinks are based on juice and have a high content of omega-3 as well as high levels of protein. Currently Nutrifriend 1100 is available to cancer patients in a number of countries.

Smartfish is currently conducting a clinical trial at clinics in Sweden, Italy and Slovakia where Nutrifriend is given to patients with lung cancer. Recruitment of patients is still ongoing. Further information about the ongoing cancer study is found here.

Jens Nordahl, CEO of Smartfish, says the company is confident that Nutrifriend in the future will be a natural part of cancer treatment. The company is also conducting a similar study in patients with COPD, another patient group where Nutrifriend is anticipated to have a beneficial effect on the mechanisms that cause loss of muscle mass.
